Free Route planner with tracker - Alternatives to MapMyRun.com?

Main Post:

I've been on mapmyrun forever. It's great cause it's free and it can sync with other apps like the Withings app through GoogleFit. But I'm not sure if I'm a massive dinosaur though I get the impression hardly anyone uses it anymore.

I'm not really interested in tracking runs with GPS. I prefer to decide where I'm going to go ahead of time on my laptop and then follow the route on my run.

Any suggestions on what's a good alternative? Before people say Strava, I really want to stress FREE alternatives.

Top Comment: I sometimes use gmap-pedometer to plan my runs and figure out distances, especially when the GPS is being unhelpful. You can log your runs there, too, and it's very basic/old-school. https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Treadmill recommendation in Switzerland - alternative to Technogym MyRun?

Main Post:

I’m looking to buy my first treadmill and would appreciate some advice on brands available in the EU or even better, in Switzerland. I’m located in Switzerland, and the selection is a little bit limited. Importing things gets expensive and I’d like to buy something locally.

I’ve had my eye on the Technogym MyRun. It’s beautiful (it will go in my office and I’m a designer, so I don’t want to hate looking at it) and I like that I can use a tablet for entertainment and am not tied to screen on the treadmill. I tried it in the store and it was great, although as others have noted, it is a little bit unstable. I am wondering if there is something available in my area for a similar price point and design style with more stability that I’m overlooking.

I have been about to pull the trigger on buying the MyRun a few times but thought I would ask here if there are any other machines out there that are comparable to the MyRun. I’ve seen brands like Tunturi, Darwin, cardiostrong that have a similar clean profile but am struggling to find many reviews.

What I’m looking for in a treadmill:

  • Clean, paired down design
  • Small footprint (folding not necessary)
  • High quality
  • Easy to repair and deliver to Switzerland
  • Quiet!
  • Fairly stable
  • Option to stream apps or put a device that will stream
  • Paddles or buttons on the machine to adjust incline and speed rather than a tiny button on a screen
  • Connectivity to Apple Watch

What’s not so important:

  • Price - I’m willing to spend money on a good, long lasting machine but don’t want to go too much over the price of the MyRun
  • High Incline option - I live in Switzerland, I love running outdoors, I have access to hills and mountains
  • A crazy amount of built in programs or features - I just don’t think I’ll use them much.
  • Dependency on a single subscription platform - I’d be interested in trying a subscription but I don’t want to be tied to a single one and I want to be able to switch to others if I feel like it.
  • Speakers or a fan - I already own these things and don’t need them on my treadmill

How I’ll use it:

  • I am somewhat of a beginner, and am building up to run long distances (my goal is to eventually run 50+km a month and right now I’m training to run a half marathon)
  • I love running outdoors (road and trail) so I won’t be exclusively running on the treadmill.
  • I also like running in a treadmill, so I’m imagining a 50/50 split or so, with more of a tendency to run outside
  • I plan to run indoors in bad weather, when getting outside just isn’t possible, or when I want to zone out on the treadmill and not worry about the trail, cars, safety, route etc.
  • I’d like to be able to have on the screen a video of a beautiful trail somewhere in the world and have the treadmill adjust incline according to what’s in the screen, but the auto adjust feature is a “nice to have” and not a deal breaker. This is the only thing missing from the MyRun for me.
  • in the past, I tend to hop on the treadmill and go, adjusting speed or incline along the way rather than follow a program. I’m open to try programs but I have a low tolerance for bad user experience and shitty screens (I’m a UX designer).

Thanks for any advice!

Top Comment: It sounds like you are describing the MyRun. 🙂 I am curious what you mean by “unstable”. I have one and don’t find it to be that at all.

Help on decision: Technogym MyRun vs Life Fitness F3 vs Sole TT8(2020 model)

Main Post:

Planning to buy one of these. Anyone with real world experience? Unable to find many reviews especially for the MyRun. Appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

Top Comment:

My Run owner. Bought it because the software is separate from the hardware, unlike almost every other treadmill. The app has been upgraded 3 times since we bought the treads treadmill - which has been fantastic. As a treadmill it does everything I need it to (incline, speed, time etc) and the app has a full suite of workouts - including interval hill work. I’m pretty heavy (> 100kg) and it handles my weight with ease. Fantastic treadmill, very happy.

Technogym MyRun Treadmill

Main Post:

I’m interested in this treadmill due to its size, but there is not that many reviews. Any thoughts? Thank you

Top Comment: I just got one. Limited experience so far, but here are my impressions. Premium feel. The controls are buttery, construction feels very solid, design is thoughtful with some nice subtle touches, and operation is very quiet. Setup is dead simple. You’ll be up and literally running in 5 minutes. The deck is firm, maybe a touch firmer than I would prefer, but feels good. It’s supposedly adaptive, but I don’t know how one would know. I needed a compact treadmill and this was one of the only ones that wasn’t also cheap garbage. It doesn’t feel too compact, though. I’m 5’ 10” and there is plenty of room in the belt for comfort, even at speeds. I stopped thinking about the deck size almost immediately. The treadmill offloads a lot of typical treadmill functions to the iPad app, which is good and bad. You can start/stop runs from the console, and control speed and incline from there, but if you want to do time runs, goals, or anything remotely advanced you need the app. The app itself is OK, and this approach means the treadmill can (and has) get new capabilities over time. The trouble in my experience is that the Bluetooth connection to the treadmill is not particularly stable and tends to drop during runs. The treadmill will keep going but you’ll lose whatever you had programmed in. I’ve done some experimenting and it seems like this instability may be related to also using the Technogym Apple Watch app. Anyway, depending on how advanced you want to get with your runs, you may find yourself relying on the tablet app which may or may not be reliable. This obviously would not be an issue with a more fully-featured console (though the MyRun would not look nearly as good with a traditional one). No view on service as yet, and hopefully not for a long while. I live in a major city and will hope for the best. I purchased the extended service plan which includes annual maintenance. The standard warranty isn’t all that good so it seemed a prudent purchase.

Anyone tried the Technogym MYRUN treadmill?

Main Post:

I run around 35 miles a week and plan to buy the Technogym MYRUN mostly for interval training and Zwift. However I can't find any reviews online which is very strange since its been available for more than 5 years.

So I'm wondering if anyone who has one or used one could provide me with some feedback. I've read quite a few negative reviews of the app that runs on the tablet, so I guess I'm most concerned about that.

Thank you!

Top Comment: Mine arrived on Tuesday so I've got some limited experience with it if you want to ask anything. Setup is extremely easy - the guys from Technogym installed mine for me, but to be honest its a 5 minute job and would have been easy to do. Flip the sides up and tighten the bolt on each side (they even provide the spanner/wrench). Then the arms clip in and you're done. It looks beautiful, like a design work of art. I bought mine to stick in front of a large screen TV to run Zwift and whatever other distraction I wanted so I primarily chose this treadmill as it was in all the Zwift promos and the nice clean uncluttered display. I really don't like the treadmills with the starship enterprise as a control panel, just give me speed, incline, time and distance, I don't need anything else. Was a bit frustrated at first when Zwift couldn't find the treadmill via bluetooth. It connected to the app on my iPad fine so I knew the bluetooth worked, but I couldn't get Zwift to find it. A few google searches later and all it needs is the latest firmware and it works flawlessly. Mine shipped with firmware 2.14 and you need firmware 20.16 or later (latest is 20.19). That isn't a typo, they have jumped up to 20 for some reason. Updating the firmware was tricky at first - there's no way of manually doing it, you just have to hope the app forces it upon you when you connect. Mine didn't on an old 6th gen iPad, but the minute I tried it on my wife's iPad Pro 11inch it promted for the update straight away and I was up and running. My iPad should have been sufficient according to the specs but who knows what that issue was - maybe signing out and in again did it rather than changing iPads. Note that there is no phone app, tablet only. I can't comment on android. I was also pleased to see that the new firmware corrected a stupid design flaw that I was moaning about and had it confirmed by technogym to me (and it's in the manual). They'd decided that they would only display the time to the second for the first 59 seconds and then after that they would only show once decimal point, so time to the nearest ten seconds. I couldn't believe they'd do something so pointless but sadly customer services confirmed it was the case. A nice little surprise was they must have seen the error in their ways as the new firmware gives you the full time to the second. Before I could use Zwift I did try using the app. It may be a touch clunky, but can't see what all the complaints are about really. It's an extra display that shows more stuff but I would have thought most people aren't buying this for the iPad app. Running in Zwift is fantastic. The speed calibration is spot on - what it shows on the treadmill display matches exactly what shows in Zwift. The run feel is good too, feels nice and smooth underfoot, better than the commercial ones I've been on in main gyms and the speed range is decent. Can get up to 12.4 mph which is 4:50 per mile pace which is fast enough. It means the fastest interval you could do for say a 400m rep would be 72.5 seconds which is fine I guess. If I wanted a faster workout than that I wouldn't be using a treadmill for it to be honest. Overall, I'm extremely happy with it. Any questions just ask.

My experience with the Technogym MyRun

Main Post: My experience with the Technogym MyRun

Top Comment: Somewhere I lost my initial comments so replying to myself here... First, forgive my video work. I created the video because like you I was once shopping for treadmills and I liked the design of the MyRun but there aren't a lot of first-hand reports of it's usage. My summary: so far, it's everything I expected and I'm very happy with the purchase. It looks and feels well-built, it's quiet, and the controls are simple, efficient and quick to respond. I was actually looking for something with good cushioning, and I'm not sure this is that, but it's certainly nicer that running on the street. Pricing: I ordered from their US website by calling the phone number to speak with a consultant. I was quoted $3,990 and given a $200 discount without asking. Freight was an additional $457 (Portland, OR). It arrived in just under one month for the black version (the gray color has a much long lead time). Feel free to ask questions if you like.

Anyone have problems with Technogym MyRun bluetooth connection?

Main Post:

I think the MyRun is a pretty great treadmill but for two things: it's a bit firm for my taste, and I've had an ongoing problem with the bluetooth connection to my tablet essentially failing to wake from sleep.

If I run on it every couple days or so I have no problems, but if I don't use it for say, 4 days, then wake up the iPad to start using it, the MyRun will pretty consistently NOT be available to connect to from my iPad. No amount of toggling bluetooth or restarting the iPad will make a difference; I have to un-plug and re-plug the MyRun, and it will immediately show up on the iPad/App and connect.

I've been talking to support about this for some time and they just sent out a tech to confirm I was doing things right. He says he's seen it once before but Technogym doesn't seem to acknowledge the problem as yet.

For what it's worth, he repairs all kinds of fitness equipment and loves Technogym.

Top Comment:

Same problem here, the app bluetooth connection is horrible. I only use the same Ipad, I am always having issue to connect, my run bluetooth is not found. This has been happening for the past year, I follow the instruction from them to always close the app when done and never connect from the iPad setting but the app itself. Anyway it is a shame that this greta treadmill has this awful connection. Also it loses the login many times, many times a week I need to login in the app.

Just got a TechnoGym Myrun

Main Post:

It was promised on December 23, and we got it on the 13. It's a beautiful machine, and has a long stride for its size.

Drawbacks are that its software does not sync with the treadmill, so you can run on its outside program, and it's still going the same speed. It's not like Nordic Trac in that respect.

Also walking on it or running on it, has not much give at all. It's very stiff, compared to the treadmills I am used to.

But for me, and more importantly, my son, it's great!

I like things that are well-made and durable. I'm very impressed by it.

If it was a car, it would be Honda Accord, something that lasts a long time, and drives very smoothy. If it was a vacuum it would be a Miele when Miele made really good and durable vacuums. Or a Vitamix when Vitamix made very durable and smooth running blenders. I'm not sure how long it will last, but my impression is that it should last at least 10 years.

TechnoGym makes great products! I would only add it's an Italian company who produces luxury, not just premium equipment, as evidenced by their recent partnership with Dior

I'm not saying you're wrong, it's definitely sturdy, reliable stuff, however my opinion is their lower cost products are more like entry-level sedans from BMW or Mercedes. You're getting premium manufacturing and design without the bells and whistles.

You'll love the treadmill - follow the maintenance guidelines to avoid relying on parts shipped from Italy. If you haven't already, I'd recommend locating a local Technogym dealer or service provider so you know who to call when needed. Let them know if there's ever even the smallest noise, since it'll be under warranty and noises can indicate issues.

Enjoy! Congrats!

Used Technogym MyRun: What should I watch out for?

Main Post:

Seller says they bought it last August but is selling because they don't really use it. I'm buying it for about 40% off RRP (though I can get a brand new one direct from Technogym for 10% off instead of RRP after contacting them).

They seller says it's perfectly functional. Cosmetically, there are scratches on the side where one would put their feet when not running. I can also see from the pics that the middle trigger (for start) is lit red rather than green. Manual says it needs a firmware update when this is lit.

What else should I watch out for?

Top Comment: Make sure they give you the small toolkit needed to lower/raise the console. Also make sure the magnetic stop switch is present and stops the treadmill when removed. Assuming you will test the basics before purchase — belt operation, incline, etc. Also make sure the two console paddle levers work, and the start/stop paddle switch works and is lights appropriately. Make sure when the treadmill is on and idle, and you step on it, the proximity sensor detects you and wakes it up. If you have a tablet, make sure to put the Technogym Live app on it and pair it with the treadmill to ensure Bluetooth is working. If you’re using a tablet, the treadmill requires it to be on the console, either in the extendable easel up top or in the tablet tray on the console front. Both locations have sensors such that if you remove the tablet during use, the treadmill will stop. Make sure both those sensors work. There’s also a USB port for charging on the back of the console. Ensure it is powered. That should cover all the electronic bits in addition to the mechanical which you’ll have to just try out.

I have a Technogym MyRun treadmill that won start… Anyone have a fix?

Main Post: I have a Technogym MyRun treadmill that won start... Anyone have a fix?

Top Comment: When I have the "won't start" problem, sometimes disconnecting the app will resolve it, and sometimes powering off, and then sometimes completely unplugging it. Sounds like you have done all of the above already. I will say that when I experience this, I don't have the - - - - that is showing across your panel. That looks like something has actually malfunctioned. I would call for service.

Technogym plus subscription on myrun

Main Post:

I got a myrun treadmill 2 weeks ago and liking the live app sessions and routines. However, when I look under account/my subscriptions I see (technogym plus) expiring in a couple of weeks.

The reason I bought myrun is not to be bothered with subscriptions so this was a surprise to me. Could owners of myrun help me understand which parts of the app become unavailable to non subscribers?

Would sessions/routines/custom/outdoors be still accessible?

Top Comment: I'm in the same boat. I got a myrun a little before you did and my subscription expired over the weekend. I can tell you for certain that the sessions are locked out as I was just about to do a workout when I got the popup asking for money. I ended up doing a custom workout, which was not locked out. Not sure about the outdoors. I haven't decided if I'll pay the money or just use the custom, or use Zwift (which I already use for bike training).
